In recent years, China’s persistent growth begins to slow down, which challenges the administration with an imminent socio-economic crisis and the potential of a massive scale of surplus capital and consequences. This conflict emerges out of the complementary “inner connection…between the developments of capitalism and urbanization” identified by British-born Marxist scholar, David Harvey. Such a problem and its resolution can be seen in France in the mid-19th century right after an economic recession as well as in the pre-WWII United States suffering from the Great Depression. Urbanization, as a solution, was adopted by the two countries to absorb the surplus products capitalism constantly produces. However, according to Engels, urbanization is merely a process of replacement and displacement of the problem rather than elimination. The exhibition tells the tale of Sinoconn, a fictitious enterprise that bundles architecture and labor as merchandise to supply low-cost production power. Its state ownership maximally consolidates political and economic leverage to guarantee the plausibility of its merchandise model. Architectural design as the medium here creates a narrative that examines our global socio-economic environment and offers speculative investigations into the future. It sarcastically depicts the absurd world order we are in today. Accumulation of Labor Force and Production Power China’s recent economic success has been substantially supported by its immense labor pool both as an overbearing production power and as a prime market power. During China’s economic reformation at the end of 20th century, the state stimulated the market to mobilize 286.5 million migrant workers moving from the countryside to seek financial opportunities in already densely populated cities. The manufacturing sector along with the service sector and real estate was able to grow rapidly. With incredible labor power on reserve, the state and its closely tied enterprise continued to maintain the economic incentives while sustaining massive production power. As domestic demand lowered, the central government looked for ways of consuming its surplus production power. Advancing communication and logistic technologies allowed China to start exporting soft products as well as physical products overseas. This proposal speculates on the present status based on historical precedents and imagines the establishment of a state-funded corporation, Sinoconn, whose business model is built upon the concept of an architectural apparatus that promises social accommodations and well-being to China’s marginalized cheap labor while also providing jobs to them. This device becomes a neo-socialist commune but functions as a de facto corporate campus guided by humanitarian ideology of capitalism. Sinoconn’s sale of the labor and its physical container as a bundled kit for production would revolutionize current mode of global trade. The corporation itself embodies the mechanism of profitable capitalist activities and would once again revitalize global capitalism. They are mostly walled behind temporary fences in corrugated aluminum sheets. Mainly consisting of mobile housing units and some minimal service facility, the settlements usually attract small grassroots businesses to fulfill working residents’ further needs and sponsor the autonomy of the village. Described in Dutch architect, Daan Roggeveen’s book, How the City Moved to Mr. Sun (2010), the “floating village” can be found in every Chinese city today near a construction site as it has been the norm of building construction since the beginning. It adopts a plug-in-and-play method to meet the requirements set by the market-driven urbanization. monumental entity to bridge the past and the present, capturing the evolution. Through modern construction techniques seen in contemporary skyscrapers, the cenotafio is erected to celebrate and commemorate classical residence. German architect Mies van der Rohe in 1921 revealed his Friedrichstrasse Skyscraper Project, which sparkled the fervor for architects to build with modern technologies and modern materials, notable glass and steel. Rohe composed with reflections and refractions and created a crystal urban spectacle. As if a “geological eruption” occurred in the heart of an industrial metropolis, the tower was meant to be the celebration of modern inventions; however, the drawings implicate a different interpretation, rather abstract and archaic. Inspired by Rohe, this project intends to emulate that affects and emotions. The design is an attempt to commemorate and translate the three wonders of architecture – classical villa, elevator, and skyscraper. Italian embassy in Moscow - 500 feet away from the Kremlin - sitting next to the Revolution Square and straight facing the iconic old Bolshoi Theatre. The hypothesis of the project challenges itself to address the contingent relationships between urban experience and the public/private institution and interpret/translate/re-iterate an architecture of identity politically, linguistically, culturally, and architecturally. SIted nearby the Kremlin, the Italian embassy is comprised of three parts dealing with a two-sided urban condition in which a large open field of spatial publicity and civic engagement (created by series of placements of buildings, which is always referred to as piazza in the Italian way) rests at front and a pedestrian street is delicately laid out at back. Through its inherent act of being positioned as a dislocated architectural fragment of iconic significance, the embassy is able to provide rich and fertile framework for exploration of the capacity of architecture to go beyond problem solving and the satisfying of given requirements to more ambitious goals. A CIVIC COMPLEX, A POLITICAL ENCLAVE Dividing the massing in the embassy compound directly addresses issues inherent in the physical site and context. In the meantime, it also informs the methodology of configuring the embassy’s programmatic functions. Despite the fundamental typological programs such as administrative (visa, office, auditorium, etc.), Ambassador’s residence, staff accommodations and press room, etc., programmatic uses concerned with cultural advertising, security, and religion are introduced and incorporated into conventional embassy design to display a national identity. The frontal bar bears the major administrative functions in its incomparable massing relative to the rest, within which the private nature of a public institution is hybridized with public utilities. The administrative bar on its own shall fully satisfy its programmatic fundamentals and operate, with external connections and internal intentions, as an independent institutional device. The existing of an seemingly fragmented but rhythmic urban texture pulls the construct to a completion of its satisfaction and so prevents it from expanding to the extent of its own as a massive whole. In that case, the backside of the building splits into five individual objects, which begins the dialogue between the gigantic compound and an intricate urban existence. All five pieces are conformed and transformed to accommodate respective programs. Inside the complex hides the heart of the Italian embassy, a forum, which, by definition, is the site for exchange of ideas and views. It acts significantly both inwards and outwards. The forum is a symbol, a record, a memory of the past, and it can be a display, a manifesto, a celebration of the new. I was tasked to independently development a design scheme for the transformation. The proposal takes on the intention to challenge the conventional circulation of multi-storey houses as well as include a series of programs to fulfill the owners’ everyday living and working demands. Entry Atrium Slabs are modified to expand the interior. An open triple-height space is created besides the front entrance that connnects vertically the three levels. A MARITIME LEGACYThe metaphors of ships, international exchange, and large-scale industry evoked by ByteDance Yangpu Riverside’s site in The Bund are important lenses through which to view ByteDance itself as it launches into an exciting, uncharted future of possibilities. As the center of China’s international exchange for centuries, The Bund represents exactly the eclectic mix of cultures, people, and ideas that make a society as well as a social media platform flourish. ByteDance’s accomplishments have surpassed even industry experts’ highest expectations by using a unique, funnel-style recommendation algorithm that quickly matches up content, elevating more popular content and relegating that which fails to resonate with its audience. Seizing on the success of its novel approach, Douyin has cemented its place as a top, new technology company, grown rapidly in recent years, and kept its competitors far behind. In addition, the platform has redefined what consumers expect from video sharing social networking services by providing user-friendly editing tools, easy-to-use video production settings, and a global and diverse audience for new creators to reach. ByteDance’s singularly exploration and community-focused corporate culture echoes the same ideals that drove previous generations who, in places just like the shipbuilding factories on ByteDance’s new Shanghai site, contributed astounding, individual curiosity and coordinated, collective effort to fuel China’s unparalleled industrialization in recent decades. In a formerly industrial area where the foundations of modern China’s flourishing economy were laid, ByteDance’s ‘Flag Ship’ design will be a central hub for an economic present and future whose forms, materiality, spatial composition, and collaborative ethos share a legacy with the previous occupants of the site along the Huangpu River. Designers face tremendous challenges when addressing the district’s congestion as they were often provided with complex programmatic objectives. To tackle such issue, we played with forms of solid and void, proposing an artistically sculpted architecture that crystalizes our hope to enhance the overall experience of its future users, young students and their faculty. The project aims to discover a new public school typology within the present frame of building regulations in China.
